           Getting to Know…
                   Roy and Sandy McCann

Ozark Blues Society volunteers and Blues Builders leaders,
Roy and Sandy, bring a wealth of experience in both music
and working with young people to this new group.

Sandy is a homeschool mom who spent her grade school and high school
years playing saxophone and dabbling in various other wind instruments.
Though she always aspired to learn how to play banjo from her grandfather
Joe Hubert, she never got the opportunity, making the switch to stringed
instruments only recently.  Her background in teaching young people is very
diverse.  Besides her experience in teaching their own six kids since 1990
(including one National Merit Scholarship finalist) she has worked as a Red
Cross swimming instructor and as a volunteer docent and lecture presenter at
the natural history museum in Dayton, OH.  Besides jumping into the role of
bass player, Sandy is filling the role of vocalist.  She is finding her place in the
blues genre as well as continuing to team with Roy on guitar and volunteer as
a vocal leader for Christian youth functions. Sandy has begun experimenting
with writing original songs and has a great desire to help young people
experience self expression through composing their own music.
Roy, an electrical engineering
professor at the University of Arkansas, has been
a guitar player since he was about 11 years old.
Though greatly self taught, he did take classes in
theory and technique to round out his knowledge.
Roy has learned and experimented with various
styles, yet his love of the blues and classic rock
styles show in his guitar playing.  As an educator
he enjoys teaching others about how to learn the
techniques needed to play in these styles.  Roy is
also an accomplished bass player, having taken
that role in Michigan to round out the rhythm
section for church.  With a high school
background as a percussion player, he will also
occasionally sit in on drums.
